What is a Serviced Apartment?

Serviced apartments, otherwise called corporate housing, apart-hotels, temporary rentals, interim housing, short-term accommodation, business rentals. All these are names for the same service : an exclusive, fully furnished and equipped apartment or executive home that's ready to move into.

It is an apartment with maid service, plus a range of facilities and services depending upon each property. All rates are per apartment, per night, unless otherwise stated. For reservations of longer than one month, reductions are nearly always available.

What's included in my apartment?

Your apartment will be completely furnished and ready to move into, including telephones, video, colour TV, all linen, towels, cutlery, crockery, kitchen utensils, microwave and cooker, a washer-dryer, iron and ironing board. Most properties have a dishwasher.

Each apartment offers between 1 and 7 days per week maid service, although most provide 5 days. If you should require additional maid service, it is normally available at an extra cost. Beds are always made ready for your arrival (except sofa beds) and towels are provided. What additional charges will I have to pay?

Additional charges are made for telephone calls and wireless broadband, and VAT is chargeable at the prevailing San-Francisco rate.

What time can I check into my apartment?

You can check in at any time and in most cases you will be welcomed personally to show you around and help you settle in. The serviced apartments in San-Francisco often have detailed information pack to ease your transition and a Welcome Pack is provided in most cases.

How does an apartment compare with a hotel?

The limitations on space can make San-Francisco hotel stays both boring and stressful, whereas the space, home comforts and own environment of a serviced apartment helps people relax.

An apartment nearly always provides more space and privacy. You may prepare meals and snacks to suit you, at prices that do not break the bank, ideal if you are with your family.

If you are on business, then you will have your own work area and a private meeting place - away from prying eyes and ears ! A serviced apartment offers a comfortable and relaxing stay in a home from home atmosphere, a place to put your feet up and relax after a busy day.

In addition, especially if sharing or in a group - a serviced apartment usually works out cheaper per person than a hotel room of an equivalent standard.

What happens when I arrive at the accommodation?

Different properties have different check-in times and where possible you will be given keys immediately, but occasionally apartments will not be ready until check-in time (if occupied the previous night - time must be allowed to clean and tidy the apartment before you move in). Almost all properties will keep your luggage safe if you are unable to gain access immediately. If you do require guaranteed access to your apartment earlier than the official check-in time, it would be necessary for you to pay for the previous night.

On arrival you should hand in your passport. You will then be asked for a credit card imprint. This imprint is to cover any additional expenses such as telephone, laundry etc. If you do not have a credit card, you must expect to be asked for a cash deposit.

Definition and Spelling: Service or serviced apartments?

Why is it that ?serviced apartments? is spelt as such in Australia and other Western countries whereas in our country, it is spelt as ?service apartments??

Similarly, which is correct: an ?advance learning centre? or an ?advanced learning centre?? ? James Law

The Oxford English Dictionary uses the term ?service flats? for ?a flat [apartment] in which domestic service and other facilities are provided at a charge included in the rent.? An Internet search showed that both ?serviced? and ?service? are now used as the adjective before such a flat or apartment. we don?t think there is anything wrong in using ?service apartments? instead of ?serviced apartments?.

?Advance? is sometimes used as an adjective as in ?advance warning? or ?advance copy?, where ?advance? means ?done or given before something that is going to happen.? (Oxford Advanced Learner?s Dictionary)

But when it comes to indicating education at a higher level, ?advanced? is used, as in the ?Advanced Level Examination? (A-Levels) in England. Also, if a learning centre uses the latest and best teaching methods and equipment, it should be called an ?advanced learning centre?, because one meaning of ?advanced? is ?having the most modern and recently developed ideas, etc.? (Oxford Advanced Learner?s Dictionary)
