The ultra-modern Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang opened
in mid-1998, and is considered one of the most modern airports in the region.
Its high-tech features include a RM700-million computerized total airport management
system that covers baggage handling among other services.
The managers, Malaysia Airports Bhd, say the KLIA can launch 80 flights an
hour, and accommodate 25 million passengers and 650 tons of cargo annually.
Operations and staff are so efficient that it takes only 75 seconds to process
each passenger at the check-in and immigration counters. Luggage waiting time
is 10 minutes. To help passengers find their way around the airport easily,
signs have been written in English and Malay.
Airy and well lit, the buildings have a total floor-space of 480,000 square
meters. KLIA's 10,000-hectare land area includes a Formula 1 racetrack, theme
parks, an amusement center, a green lung, and provision for airport expansion
to handle 100 million passengers annually.
Hundreds of public phones are located throughout the airport, mainly at the
Arrival and Departure areas, and are generally in good working order. These
phones accept Amex, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa cards, as well as smart
cards that can be purchased at the airport.
Maps and guidebooks can be obtained at the Tourism Malaysia counter at the
international Arrival hall, after Customs, on Level 3 of the main terminal
building. The main terminal and the satellite building are linked by a 180-people
capacity "aerotrain" that leaves every 5 minutes.
